Stevia: The No-Cal Sweetener from Nature Has Been a Long Time Coming

If you’ve been a longtime follower of my teachings – you already know that I’ve been using the no calorie, all natural sweetener, stevia, since I was about 18 years old (that’s since 1998).

I’ve posted many articles about stevia, simple recipes with stevia as an ingredient – and I’ve even highlighted this amazing plant extract in my book, Fatness to Fitness.

All along – I’ve been hinting at the tremendous potential of this healthy herb – known around the word as stevia (rebaudioside A).

Well – one of the biggest obstacles has been recently pushed aside – by the hand of the obstacle itself… the FDA.

The FDA has issued letters of “no objection” to companies which use stevia as a natural, no calorie sweetener, essentially stating it would no longer seek to oppress or outlaw stevia-based sweeteners used in health foods and beverages.

I can’t even begin to tell you the importance of this breakthrough. In short – stevia will prove to be a major element in the health, wellness and fitness fields for generations to come.

Artificial Sweeteners and Your Fitness

I get lots of emails asking about my position on artificial sweeteners. I mention briefly in my free version of the Blow-Torch Diet ebook that I am against them and I advise all readers to stay away from them.

I also mention the herbal extract, Stevia, as a safe and natural alternative. I give it to my kids – thats how much I believe in it. Me and Jeri-Jo do not allow them (or us) to consume chemically altered sweeteners.

I also mention that I will be addressing some of the finer details about this subject in my book, “Fatness to Fitness”.

In the meantime – here is an article that Pam forwarded to me last week. (In her email Pam wrote, “Joey, you are on the cutting edge!”) – in some regards, she’s right – however, being on the cutting edge sometimes just involves using a little bit of foresight and some ‘universal’ common sense.

Before you read the article – please be warned that there is information that sits ‘between the lines’ – and most who read this will not pick up on this vital info – but I am making it a point to address it solidly in my book (I know many of you have been waiting very patiently for the book – please note – we are getting closer! & are hoping to have it published in the first half of 2008).

Read the article for all that its worth – but also remember – the most important stuff is not in black and white – it’s ‘below the surface’.

My Deepest Dieting Fear Conquered: Fat Loss Is Forever…

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I’ve finally been able to make the complete transition (my life-long dream) to working from home (or anywhere else I wish to take my laptop)…

But what I never told you is…

During the last year, leading up to this milestone, one of my biggest fears of working from home was “what’s going to happen with my eating habits once I’m operating from home on a full time basis?”

See – as you already know – I’ve had my personal challenges since childhood with my weight, body image, food codependency and a wicked sweet tooth…

I’m quite different from the majority of personal trainers/weight loss coaches who have “always been in shape” – most of them have never lived through the experience of living “a full time battle with your body and mind”…

But I’ve been on the other side and I know exactly what it’s like…

During my adult years – ESPECIALLY with kids in the house – one of my biggest challenges has been ‘being at home on the weekend after a long, busy work week…’

I would simply eat whatever I could get my hands on. Up until about 4 years ago – I couldn’t conquer this demon – it was the last ‘weak point’ that I needed to fix – or so I thought…

During the last 4 years – I did beat that challenge – and weekends were no longer “2 days of uncontrollable binge eating” – they were under complete and natural control and in line with my goals…

But I had never been home EVERY DAY… And when I realized what this type of challenge this situation might hold for me – it was a bit scary and unsettling… But onward we go…

Well it’s been about 2 and a half months since I started working from home on a full time basis – and I’m quite excited to share… “the final demon has been conquered” – as a matter of fact my state of mind, self awareness and “living in line with my desires” is easier and more natural than I thought it would be…

The goal I set for myself about 5 years ago was to get back to my high school weight of 133lbs – BEFORE I hit the age of 39 – and STAY at that weight – with a body-fat% of no higher than 12%…

Well – my weight is holding an average steady of 133.5lbs with a body-fat% ranging between 9.8 and 11.5 and I’m 38 years young …I DID IT!!

Did this happen “by accident” or just “by itself”? No way… See, this type of ‘change’ doesn’t happen by accident – there are things I did… simple, subtle yet powerful things… – that ANYONE can do (yet most people don’t do – because they are not shown how) – to make this kind of self improvement success happen…

And these are precisely the things I’ll be teaching when I open the doors to ‘Every Day Fat Loss’ at the start of 2009. Lots of questions have been coming in via email and on this blog about the program – so I’ll answer some of them here:


What Is ‘Every Day Fat Loss’

1 – It is ideal for any woman who has struggled with her weight – and currently desires to get the fat off and keep it off…

Ok – about this Fat Loss Disc…

2 weekends ago – me and Jeri-Jo (my wife) took the kids to the park to run and play, etc… We usually grab a soccer ball or a football – but this day – I grabbed a frisbee…

I’ve always loved playing frisbee – ever since I started throwing one as a youngster. During my teen years we’d throw it so much we had to start using glow in the dark frisbees – because we just didn’t want to stop, even when the sun went down…

We never got tired because it was endless fun. Seeing who could throw it farther, faster, trickier – and of course who could catch it behind the back, between the legs, behind the head – you name it…

Coming back to the present… now in my older youth – it’s still just as fun – but now I have the joy of teaching my kids how to throw and catch a frisbee – and they’re loving it…

We all broke a good sweat, burned a bunch of calories – even got a little good muscle soreness from all the different movements involved in throwing, chasing and catching this magical little disc…

I was so back into it – I ran to Target during the week and picked up the MaxFlight from Wham-O that you see pictured above (I got mine in black though) – and it cost just a few cents over $7. Now how’s that for a fun, effective and portable piece of fat burning cardio equipment that the whole family can use??

We went back to the park again this past weekend – and did our ‘Frisbee-Fit’ workout with the MaxFlight I picked up… If you want to get yours – just go to Amazon – they have a ton of frisbees…

My main point here is… effective exercise and weight loss – doesn’t have to be boring, monotonous or expensive – as you an see from my perfect example above…

Be creative, have fun – and “think outside the gym”…

I went through a bunch of diet & weight loss advertisements and notes I took over the last few months.

There are a handful of claims that these products or programs make – that are a loud signal for you to know that you are looking at a rip-off.

This is not a complete list – as I have more to add in the future – but so far these are the most frequently abused BS claims…

When you see them – just keep going – and don’t be fooled…

“Lose weight without diet or exercise!”

“Lose weight no matter how much you eat of your favorite foods!”

“Lose weight permanently! Never diet again!” <= this one can be true but most of the time it is NOT)

“Block the absorption of fat, carbs, or calories!”

“Lose more than 30 pounds in 30 days!”

“This works for everyone because it’s so easy!”

“Lose weight with our miracle supplement, diet patch or cream!”

What claims have you come across (or even tried) – that are clear rip-off diet or weight loss scams?

The latest research shows that 99% (99 out of every 100 people) of the general public is tuned into the mass media via 2 or 3 mediums, at minimum, at an attention level adequate enough to be influenced and/or (mis)led by it. …not surprising at all…

But in that statistic lies some sordid truths…

By mass media – I’m referring to TV News/Talk Shows, Commercials, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, etc…

And since mass media is supported by the Big Money Players (companies with lots and lots of money to spend on, (and control) advertising, and indirectly – programming…)

You ONLY get exposed to “their products” over, and over, and over – and for every commercial or advertisement that is run – there are a certain number of buyers (you may have been one of those buyers at some point…) that these companies can ‘bank on’ – and hence they keep pouring money (that comes from the profits they generate from all the consumers) into this perpetual money machine…

People BUY – They TRY – They FAIL…

- and the cycle keeps repeating itself…

BUY… TRY… FAIL…

BUY… TRY… FAIL…

This may sound familiar to you – or you may have seen people you know, experience this demoralizing cycle…

The problem is – this prevents you from getting access to other products and solutions, produced by real professionals… individuals (not big companies or wealthy doctors who have lots of money to write a diet book and then spend millions of dollars on advertising)…

Lower Body, Core, Abs and Cardio Exercise COMBINED

As you know – I love exercising outdoors – and today was one of my favorite workouts. I do this once a week for my legs, butt, hips, thighs, abs, core and metabolism boosting, calorie burning cardio.

I woke up at about 7am when my 4 year old, Darah, came in and climbed up on the bed to wake me up… I brushed my teeth, got my running shoes on – saw the girls out the door – then hit the pavement…

I did a brisk jog for about 1.25 miles AWAY from the house – broke a nice sweat – saw some other morning exercisers as well…

Then turned back TOWARD the house…

…and did 30 walking lunge touch-downs (15 per side)…

- followed by 50 brisk walking steps
- followed by 30 all-out sprint strides

…then I kept repeating ’til I got home:

- 30 walking lunge touch-downs…
- followed by 50 brisk walking steps
- followed by 30 all-out sprint strides

Now – depending on your fitness level…

…you can vary this many ways… For example, if you are an out of shape beginner…

You can do a brisk walk for 3/4 of a mile – AWAY from the house…

Then turning back toward your house, you can do modified, half-range walking lunges with a shin touch-down – 10 to 20 reps for starters…

Then you follow those with a brisk jog for about 20 to 30 strides…

…followed by brisk walking for about 50 strides…

You’ll only appreciate the effectiveness of this mini-workout AFTER you’ve done it. Let me know how you like it…

Real Fat Loss Secrets: Do This and Lose Fat Non-Stop – Regardless of Age, Genetics or Body-Type

Ok – you ready?

    Go into your kitchen…

  • Chop up a half a tomato
  • Chop up a cup and a half of lettuce
  • Add 1/3 can of chick peas (be careful which brand you choose)
  • Add 4 – 6 pre-washed baby carrots
  • Add a sprinkle of sea salt
  • Add a shake of black pepper
  • Add 2 shakes of balsamic vinegar
  • Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Mix and eat…

There – now you’re burning fat…

Easy right?

Yeah, I agree…

That’s EXACTLY what I just ate for lunch – and it was awesome…

It tasted great. I’m satisfied but not stuffed. My energy is at peak level – and I don’t feel sluggish like most people do after the typical mass population crappy lunch. I won’t be hungry for about 3 or 4 more hours and if I do get hungry – I just dig into my bag of tricks (tactics, actually) and I’m still on target – keeping my metabolism steadily burning right along…

The truth is – fat loss is really that easy – but I also understand you might have a lot of questions about that recipe and about other elements that are related to that recipe and the big picture of fat loss and ‘dieting’ – such as…

  • “When do I eat that, Joey?”
  • “Can I substitute something in that recipe, Joey?”
  • “I work the night shift, Joey – when should I plan this meal?”

Here’s my advice – straight from an industry insider, consumer advocate and someone who truly cares about YOU and your results…

Don’t fall for any of it…
Don’t allow yourself to be dazzled…
Don’t let your emotional guard down…
Don’t let yourself be fooled, robbed and cheated…

In anticipation of the fat loss diet coaching program I’m putting together – you can expect to see lots of talk about the fat loss dieting subject on this blog – lightly sprinkled with other various topics of enhanced health, fitness and LIFE.

As a follow up to one of my recent articles: the emphasis of the new program (set for release in about 2 months) will be on ‘tactics’ – … a handful of closely guarded tactics that I’ve been reluctant to share until a recent conversation with an old fitness colleague of mine, Frank.

I’ve been pretty secretive about these tactics over the last 21 years because they are very unlike what you read about in the mainstream world – and I haven’t been quite sure if I want to go ‘against the grain’ as there is no question they will raise controversy – not because they are unsafe – but simply because they are different – and deviously simple to use…

I’m finding it hard to believe that something out of a can such as the peas, corn, etc. can be healthy for You as I’ve read labels on cans & have been told by health professionals to stay away from canned food & eat fresh as they all have large amounts of sodium, salts, & hidden sweeteners, etc…so please help Me understand how this will help My daughter who was so happy that I found something that would help Her…

Great question Jules…

I’ve mentioned this in many past articles, in interviews, in my book Fatness to Fitness, and in the Blow-Torch ‘Diet’ section itself…

“Always choose fresh or frozen over canned goods when it works for you.”

The reasons why I make this statement is…

GENERALLY speaking – canned foods ‘tend’ to have more sodium and preservatives than their fresh or frozen twins. Additionally – there is ongoing controversy about BPA lined cans – and their potential to adversely affect your health.

HOWEVER, it’s important to note that there are many canned products that I consider to be VERY good options for the weight control in a healthy lifestyle…

For example – today for lunch I ate half a can of chick peas with some other ingredients – from the company ‘Eden’ – they make many organic items AND – they have done away with using cans that are lined with BPA – great news for us – as this move will prompt many other companies to do the same!

In regards to high sodium content…

MANY items now are available in a low or no sodium version – and some savvy companies are using the healthiest salt available… SEA SALT

Another example:

Yesterday – for lunch I simply opened a can of ORGANIC Spicy Vegetarian (I’m not a vegan) Chunky Chili from Health Valley – NO SALT ADDED (this is on the front label) – it was a 2 serving can – I ate the whole thing…

So – a $2.19 organic lunch that took me 30 seconds to open and about 10 minutes to eat – and who said eating well was hard and expensive!! Anyway… here’s the nutrition breakdown for the whole can:

* Calories = 300
* Fat = 2 g
* SODIUM = 150 mg (this is amazing!!)
* Carbs = 62 g
* FIBER = a whopping 20 grams !!
* Protein = 18 grams!! – I can feel my muscles growing as I eat it!!

I hope that clears things up…. OH! – I gotta mention this… As I was putting this article together – I was notified that yet another fat loss diet scam went live on the internet this week – I wont get into the details today – but when the time is right – I’m gonna show you EXACTLY how to tell that the program is pure bogus right down to it’s core. You will be sick to your stomach when I expose this thing…

Six Pack Abs vs. Eight Pack Abs – What’s the Difference


One of the most often asked questions I get from guys is “Joey why is it that some guys have six pack abs and others get eight pack abs? Is it their diet, their workouts or what?”

What made me think of writing this article today is my friend, Mike from http://www.HowToGet6PackAbs.com – called me about a week ago while he was working on a new article – to ask me my perspective on the same exact question.

In a nutshell here’s what I told him:

If you take a look at this photo:

You’ll see what’s known as the Rectus Abdominus – these are the 2 strip like muscles that look like 2 pieces of flat beef jerky running parallel to each other, from the pubic area up to the sternal area…

Each strip has white lines running horizontally trough them – these are bands of connective tissue.

For most men – the top 3 bands (not including the top band/connective tissue where you see the muscles attach to the front of the rib cage) are what creates the six packs abs look…

But what about the bottom band? Don’t all men have that same band in the lower abdominal area?

Yes – we all do – but (now here’s where ‘genetics’ comes into play) – that bottom band – in most men – is sitting at the same level as the muscle – or very close to the same level.

See the ones above it – the ones that create the six pack look – are actually lying below the level of the muscles – so they create like a little valley between the individual ‘blocks’ of muscle.

So – since the ones at the bottom are at the same level as the muscles – there is no ‘valley’ – to create the separated look and hence you don’t see the eight pack – just a six pack – not that “just a six pack” is such a bad thing to have, right?

That’s the simple truth.

Some experts will argue that with “stricter dieting” and “harder workouts” – you can eventually get your six packs to become eight pack abs…

But if you’ve know me for a while – my philosophy on this is:

Just give me the six pack – I don’t need two more – I have a life to live and it’s not ‘in the gym’…

I was at work today working away and a lady come up to me and said “you know I was going to buy a big bag of chips, but I seen you over there and know all the weight you had lost and I put the chips back cause I didn’t really need them” I told her “good for you”.

She told me she had lost a bit of weight but put some of it back on, now she has a tough time trying to get back into the routine of sticking to her diet. I told her the next time she got the urge for a snack grab a fruit to eat like an apple, orange, grapes, banana or a pear. If it’s nice out you may just go for a little walk. Sometimes it’s hard work but worth it in the end.

I guess this is a part of the fitness ripple effect. I’m still smiling and proud that I can be such an influence on people I don’t even know.

PS – Before that I had another lady today come up to me, I didn’t know she was and asked me where did I go to (meaning the weight loss), she told me I looked good and I’m doing a great job. I told her I had 158 lbs gone and her jaw dropped; I said it was over 2.5 years losing it slowly so it didn’t make me look sick like some people do when they lose a lot of weight.

Then first thing this morning when the store opened a young lady who works at Tim Horton’s was in picking up groceries and I said “Good Morning” to her, she looked around and seen me there working away and she said “you know the other day I seen you at the mall and you look good”

I told her thank you! hehehehe
